Immersive Videos: foresight brought to life

The power of video to immerse people in an unfamiliar setting or convey a complex idea in just a few short minutes makes it an ideal medium for building future literacy in an organization or a community. IFTF began developing immersive future videos well before the launch of YouTube, and its importance as a tool for making the future continues to grow.

An immersive video can take viewers into the world of alternative future scenarios, allowing them to compare and contrast the experience of those different worlds. Or it can illustrate the impacts of today’s trends on specific practices in the future. It can capture the details of daily life today to help think systematically about choices for the future. And it can build a futures literacy among the many different kinds of people who have a stake in the future.

Videos can also be a way to begin making the future today. For many youth-oriented projects, for example, IFTF has invited young people to make a video of themselves in the future, laying the groundwork for them to become the future they imagine for themselves. In three or four minutes, an immersive video can inspire passion about the future and galvanize action to make it what we want it to be.
