Gabriel's research pivots on the interactions between ecology, design, and infrastructure as pervasive enabling resources for services, technology, and evolutionary change. As Research Manager in the Technology Horizons program, Gabriel draws on work in the life sciences, public health and disaster preparedness, education, experimental media, and design.
Prior to joining IFTF, Gabriel worked with a multi-disciplinary team at the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy in Bangalore, India to develop rich-interactive simulations, social media, and gaming tools for envisioning infrastructure trade-offs and transitions. Gabriel's work as a Design Ecologist included design-based and primary research with stakeholders on agricultural supply chains, disaster preparedness, and energy futures to inform new methodologies and channels for cooperation and participation in India's next generation infrastructure futures.
Gabriel is a founding faculty artist-in-residence of the Center for Experimental Media Arts (CEMA) at the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, a graduate program for tactical media art and participatory design. At CEMA, his work focused on design for education and creating a participatory media framework for investigating water and public health concerns.
Gabriel holds a MFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a B.A. and M.A. in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior from Indiana University, Bloomington. His favorite research topics include the role of narrative suspense in science, large technological systems, and design as infrastructure.
