What We Do
Director, Strategic Initiatives
Tom helps global businesses, government agencies, and large nonprofits build their ongoing capacity to understand and create the future. He specializes in applying futures thinking to strategy and innovation, often by integrating foresight activities and deliverables with the rest of the organization.
Tom founded Social Technologies, a 35-person research and consulting firm with offices in Washington, London, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv. His firm provided foresight, strategy, and innovation services typically to global corporations. Social Technologies advanced the field of strategic foresight by publishing the first edition of Thinking about the Future and sponsoring development of the Foresight Maturity Model. The firm was acquired in 2008.
He also started Give.com, a social venture to help donors and nonprofits make the best use of charitable giving. The venture sponsored donor-advised funds, provided investment advisory services, and developed a software platform to reduce the cost of donating, raising, and investing funds. The venture was acquired in 2014.
Tom began his career as a futurist with a Master of Science in Studies of the Future and employment with Coates & Jarratt and the Institute for Alternative Futures. He was also a founding board member of the Association of Professional Futurists.
