If youth are our future, what of the future of youth (leaders)?
Youth leadership is a hot button issue these days. But I think what we tend to forget—or don’t have the opportunity to understand—is that youth leadership is very different throughout the world. Missing these nuances could lead to potentially ineffective global youth leadership initiatives.

Mapping Kenya's largest slum
Kenya has begun an impressive project to map Kibera, it's largest slum. Although Kibera has an estimated 1 million inhabitants, the sum is a big black spot on any map. This makes the process of community development projects next to impossible as no one can begin to plan improvements on a big black hole.

Chadians look to past traditions to survive present food crisis, and I am reminded of some Superstruct stories
In IFTF’s first ever massively multiplayer forecasting game Superstruct (www.superstructgame.net)
players spent a lot of time and energy trying to solve 5 superthreats. One of them, Ravenous, focused on a hypothetical global food crisis. How do we restructure our eating habits and global food networks? Ideas ranged from rooftop gardens to virtual spaces that allowed people from around the world to connect over best practices and try out new methods, to seed ATMS and the idea that food is a right, not a luxury, and should be free. Someone even created a superstruct involving insects as our primary source of protein, insects4food. The superstruct won an award for thinking outside of the box, but not for practicality. Most of us think eating insects as out primary source of protein is taking it too far, but for others, it might not be that bad.

Ruby`s Bequest in Kenya?
I’ve been reading through Ruby’s Bequest and have been struck by how useful a similar exercise could be for Kenya. When it comes to caring for the mentally ill, many Kenyan’s still live in the dark ages. To begin with, there is little to no government support. There is little to no education regarding mental illness. Kenya only has 60 psychiatrists, one for every 500,000 people. There is no education regarding the causes of mental illness, most people still think mental illness is caused by bad behavior.

Unleashing Open Source for Development in Africa
A few members of the Tech Horizons team are in Johannesburg, South Africa this week, launching a new IFTF program (Science In Place) at the XXV World Conference of the International Association of Science Parks.
I have been taking the opportunity to meet with a number of people who are trying to leverage open source technology to bridge the "digital divide" and spread computing and communications tools throughout the country and the entire continent.
