The Future of Medical Research: Breakthroughs to Cures Game & Report

Institute for the Future is pleased to release its final analysis of the Breakthroughs to Cures participatory forecasting game. Developed with the Myelin Repair Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the game invited players into a future where a recently discovered neurodegenerative disease threatens to kill hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Designed to stretch the thinking of participants, the Breakthroughs to Cures game engaged hundreds of researchers, patients, and worldwide experts in imaging the future of medical research.

Named One of the 10 Most Socially Impactful Games of 2010

Throughout the game, players generated a variety of wide-ranging discussions on new ways to approach medical research, ranging from innovating new models to engage citizen scientists to redesigning technological infrastructure to facilitate data mining for research. As a result of the wide variety of creative ideas during game play, Breakthroughs to Cures was named #7 of the 10 most socially impactful games by Games for Change.
